Challenger Division FAQ

What is the Challenger Division?

The Challenger Division offers boys and girls with physical and developmental challenges, ages 5 to 18 (or the completion of high school), the opportunity to participate in an organized game of baseball.  The fundamental goal of the Challenger Division is to give everyone a chance to play regardless of ability or limitations.  Challenger Baseball participants learn not only the fundamentals of baseball, but also experience pulling together as a team, being cheered on by a crowd, and being encouraged by their peers.

Do players require experience?

No experience necessary!  Players will participate in the game to complement their particular needs and interests.  Basic adaptations will be implemented when necessary.  Parents may watch from the stands or participate on the field.  The fundamental goal of Challenger Baseball is to give everyone a chance to play.  To realize that goal, Challenger has two basic rules: every player bats each inning, and every player plays the field.  We don’t count strikes, and we don’t count outs.  Everybody scores, and everybody wins.

When and where will games be played?

Games will be played at McLean Little League on 1836 Westmoreland Street.  The schedule varies from season to season, but games generally take place on Saturday mornings for a 10 week period running from April to early June. Games will last approximately an hour.

 What is a Challenger Buddy?

A Challenger Buddy is a volunteer that has successfully completed the MLL Challenger Buddy Training Program.  The buddies assist the Challenger players on the field, but whenever possible, encourage the players to bat and make plays for themselves.  However, the buddy is always nearby to help when needed.  Each player will be paired with a buddy. If you are interested in serving as a Challenger Buddy, please see the application under the Challenger section of this web site, or contact John Shank (shank@mcleanll.com).
